Amid the azure waters of the Indian Ocean lies Sri Lanka, a “jewel island” blessed by nature. Beyond its world-renowned gemstones, the island is also home to Ceylon tea, one of the world’s three most celebrated high-aroma black teas.

The island’s high-altitude mountains bring cooler temperatures, while abundant rainfall carried by the Indian Ocean monsoons alternates with bright sunshine during the dry season. This unique combination creates ideal conditions for tea cultivation. Over time, black tea took root and flourished on this land, becoming one of Sri Lanka’s gifts to the world.
For Boduo, traveling to Sri Lanka is not simply about finding a good cup of tea. It is also an in-depth exploration of the supply chain at its source.
From tea-growing regions and plantations to processing and professional tasting, we aim to look beyond layers of information passed along the supply chain and gain a direct understanding of the true quality, pricing, and availability of raw materials. Our goal is to identify ingredient solutions around the world that combine outstanding quality with cost competitiveness.
Going to the Source: Understanding Tea from Its Origin
In this land known as the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean,” tea is more than a beverage—it is a century-spanning story.
Recently, Boduo’s R&D team traveled to Sri Lanka and ventured deep into the central highlands, specifically the Nuwara Eliya tea-growing region, embarking on a journey to trace tea from plantation to cup.
The journey began in Kandy, Sri Lanka’s historic city in the central highlands. From there, the team traveled south toward Nuwara Eliya, a representative highland tea-growing region and a city widely known as the “Tea Capital.”
Lush tea gardens stretch across the winding mountain terraces like thick green carpets. Amid the vibrant greenery, Tamil tea-picking women dressed in colorful saris are scattered throughout the plantations, skillfully plucking the tender two leaves and a bud from each tea shoot.
The region’s distinctive high-altitude environment gives its tea a fresh and elegant floral and fruity aroma, along with a light and lively taste.
The black tea produced here is celebrated on the international market as the “Champagne of black teas.”

This visit was warmly received and fully supported by a renowned Sri Lankan tea company. Accompanied by its professional team, Boduo’s R&D personnel ventured deep into the core tea-growing region and engaged in face-to-face conversations with local tea farmers, gaining a close-up look at the unique character of Ceylon tea.
From Origin to Cup: Developing Selection Standards for Tea Applications
To identify exceptional Ceylon black tea, Boduo’s R&D team embarked on an immersive tasting experience in Sri Lanka.
The team selected representative samples from a range of freshly produced highland black teas. Each sample was brewed according to professional tea-tasting procedures, while the team examined key information such as elevation, harvest batch, and fermentation time.

Following professional tasting steps—including observing liquor color, assessing aroma, tasting flavor, and examining the infused leaves—the R&D team conducted detailed comparisons and engaged in repeated discussions about each tea sample.
For tea ingredients used in beverage applications, “expensive” does not necessarily mean “suitable.” In addition to aroma and flavor, Boduo pays close attention to tea liquor strength, stability, compatibility with milk and other ingredients, and overall cost performance in large-scale applications.
After extensive tasting, discussion, and evaluation, two Ceylon black teas with distinctive and memorable flavor profiles stood out.
1. High-Aroma Ceylon Black Tea
High-Aroma Ceylon Black Tea is a granular CTC black tea with tightly rolled, uniform granules. It produces a bright orange-red liquor that is clear and transparent.
Its aroma features woody notes, followed by a bright, pronounced fruity character that emerges toward the finish, creating a rich and layered profile. Smooth on the palate, it combines fruity and woody aromas, with a sweet, uplifting finish that leaves a lasting impression.
This tea is well suited to fresh milk tea, light milk tea, and pure tea beverages where a pronounced tea aroma is desired.
2. Full-Bodied Ceylon Black Tea
Full-Bodied Ceylon Black Tea is a broken-leaf black tea with a dark, lustrous appearance. Once brewed, it produces a rich, bright red liquor and a deep, restrained woody aroma.
With a relatively high degree of fermentation, this tea delivers a full-bodied and robust taste, accompanied by a slightly stronger astringency for a clean and crisp mouthfeel. Its lingering finish allows the woody notes to remain on the palate.
With its rich and powerful character, this tea is well suited to milk tea, flavored tea beverages, and applications that require a stronger tea liquor.

Both teas are sourced from the highland tea-growing region of Nuwara Eliya. Each offers excellent quality while expressing a distinctive flavor profile.
Leveraging its global supply chain resources, Boduo is further connecting the links from origin sourcing and product selection to processing and overseas delivery. By reducing unnecessary intermediaries while maintaining consistent quality, we aim to make our products more cost-competitive.
Continuously Strengthening Our Global Supply Chain
Behind every good cup of tea lies the terroir of its origin, the craftsmanship of tea farmers, and an unwavering pursuit of quality.
This journey to the Nuwara Eliya highlands of Sri Lanka marks another important step in Boduo’s exploration of high-quality supply chain resources around the world.

Boduo has always regarded supply chain development as one of the core strategies for its long-term growth. We understand that only by going directly to the source can we truly understand the essence of a product. And only by building deep partnerships with high-quality producing regions can we achieve quality control throughout the entire chain—from cultivation and processing to end applications.
That is why our focus extends beyond tea. We are also exploring agricultural regions around the world with distinctive advantages and high-quality resources. Boduo will continue to expand its global sourcing network and establish long-term, stable strategic partnerships with more world-class suppliers.
Looking ahead, Boduo will continue to uphold rigorous ingredient selection standards while combining a global perspective with deep local expertise to further strengthen its supply chain from source to end application.
Through our continued efforts, we hope to bring high-quality ingredients from around the world to the market in a more efficient, stable, and cost-competitive way; provide an ongoing source of inspiration for product innovation; and create tangible value for our customers.
Ultimately, our goal is to bring exceptional flavors from around the world to consumers in a way that is simpler, purer, and more accessible.
